Alpha-lipoic acid (ALA) is a natural compound found in every cell of our bodies. It helps turn glucose (sugar) into energy and acts as a powerful antioxidant, neutralizing harmful substances called free radicals. ALA is unique because it is both water- and fat-soluble, allowing it to work in different parts of our cells.
Health Benefits
Supports Nerve Health: ALA may help people with nerve damage, especially those with diabetes.
Blood Sugar Control: ALA can help lower blood sugar levels, making it helpful for people with diabetes.
Reduces Inflammation: It has anti-inflammatory properties which may help in conditions like heart disease.
Protects Skin: ALA can help protect skin from damage and improve skin health.
Regenerates Other Antioxidants: ALA can also help regenerate antioxidants like Vitamin C and E.
Sources*
Red Meat: Especially organ meats like liver and heart.
Spinach: This leafy green is a good plant source.
Broccoli: Another green veggie that contains ALA.
Potatoes: A common food that has some ALA.
Tomatoes: They also have small amounts of ALA.
Note: While these foods contain ALA, the amounts are much lower than what is typically used in supplements, and the health benefits discussed are mostly linked to higher, supplemental doses.
Recommended Dietary Allowance
There is no official Recommended Dietary Allowance (RDA) for alpha-lipoic acid. However, supplement doses range from 300-600 mg daily. It’s always best to talk to a healthcare provider before starting any new supplement.
